Evidence based research shows us that both food synergy and diet diversity are important for a healthy oral microbiome. This content-rich, interactive course, a pediatric dentist and a licensed nutritionist will share the scientific evidence surrounding the impact of diet and nutrition on the immune system and the oral cavity. Attendees will learn about the vital link between the foods we eat and our oral health. Not only can this knowledge support your personal health, but it can be used in your clinical practice as well.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this session, participants will be able to:

  1. Utilize the emerging body of science and new research supporting the association of healthy eating and food synergy to promote optimal oral and systemic health in their own lives, as well as in their patient care practices.
  2. Gain greater insight into the role nutritional status has on supporting a better response to preventing inflammation in the mouth and the body.
  3. Take steps to incorporate nutrient dense foods into their daily dietary routine in order to get the nutrients that they need to optimize immunity and oral health.

Sara KarlinSara Karlin, DDS; Maryland ’16

Dr. Sara Karlin is a board certified pediatric dentist working as Dental Director at Children’s Rehabilitative Services and Clinical Adjunct Assistant Professor at Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health. She received her Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Maryland and completed her D.D.S. at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry. Dr. Karlin pursued her specialty training at New York University and Bellevue Hospital Center, earning a certificate in Pediatric Dentistry.





Ellen KarlinEllen Karlin MMSc, RDN, LDN, FADA

Ellen Karlin, a nutrition consultant specializing in food allergy and dental health, was a nutrition consultant to dentists in Maryland for over 30 years. Ellen holds a Master of Medical Science degree in nutrition education. She is a fellow of the American Dietetic Association, a spokesperson for the American Dairy Association North East and a nationally recognized speaker. She was the co-author of “Dental and Oral Considerations in Pediatric Celiac Disease”.
