How has ASDA helped you build your leadership skills?
Being such a large and structured organization, you’re never without support in any leadership position. As President of the Texas A&M chapter, there have been many situations where I was unsure about what to do or how to go about resolving them. Fortunately, I have always been able to ask for help and input from our Immediate-Past President as well as the staff from ASDA Chapter Engagement. Through such a great support system, I have been able to adapt and develop my own leadership style that works for me and my chapter.
What do you think is the most vital quality in a leader?
While there are many qualities that are important in being a leader, the most significant one I think is the ability to generate synergy within your team. At the very core of a leadership position, your job is to ensure your team works well with each other and provides creative ideas and solutions. As a leader, you don’t have to be the best at any one thing so long as you are able to guide and support your team to creating the best outcomes together.
Why should members get involved with ASDA leadership positions?
At our school, ASDA has become the largest student organization and holds 42 positions in its cabinet including officers and committee members. This doesn’t even include the leadership positions available at the district and national levels! Needless to say, there is no way you can be a one-man band at any level and expect to make the same impact as a goal-oriented team working together. Getting involved in ASDA as a leader means working with others to contribute towards something greater than what one person can achieve alone. This sense of community, organization, and knowing that you will always have help on you side makes ASDA one of the most rewarding organizations to be a part of.
What future leadership roles in organized dentistry interest you and why?
While I am unsure about what specific leadership role I would want to be in for organized dentistry, I know that I do want to continue being involved in the future of our profession. After graduation, I plan on having continued membership with the American Dental Association, Texas Dental Association, and likely the Dallas County Dental Society if I decide to stay in Dallas. After attending ADA Lobby Day 2024, I realized I really enjoyed advocating on behalf of my fellow dentists and dental students and can certainly see myself continuing to do so at those levels.
