How has ASDA helped you build your leadership skills?
As a D1 student, I applied for the UIC ASDA chapter’s D1 representative role after a friend suggested that I do so (shoutout Marty!). I did not know much about the organization, as we had just begun dental school. I applied to meet more dental students and to become more involved, but I never knew just how much ASDA would impact me and transform my dental school experience as a whole.

This first year, I was introduced to advocacy and organized dentistry. It was incredible and inspiring to see the impact that dental students have in representing the dental student voice about various issues in dentistry.

My D2 year, I took on a new role, as the Fundraising Chair. Through this role, I networked with dental students, faculty, and sponsors, gained confidence in leading fundraising efforts, and ultimately strived to make our chapter successful. It was during this year that I recognized that involvement in ASDA allows dental students to transition into future leaders in the dental profession. It guided me to have more interpersonal communication, to become more responsible, and to always keep an open mind.

Lastly, my D3 year, I am now holding the Vice President position. Through this role, I have the ability to relate to students who’ve held my previous roles, to delegate responsibilities, and encourage other dental students to become involved. I am forever grateful for my decision to join ASDA and believe that all dental students can become better leaders, clinicians, and people through their ASDA membership.

What do you think is the most vital quality in a leader?
As a former collegiate athlete, I believe that the most vital quality in a leader is to be a team player. Team players are passionate, great communicators, and push those around them to be a better version of themselves. Some of the best leaders I know celebrate their teammates’ successes as if they were their own. One important lesson that I learned through athletics is that you either win or learn. This, too, can be applicable to dental school with each new challenge faced in classes, pre-clinics, and patient care. An ideal leader does not give up after failing - but instead rises to the challenge and allows it to fuel their future successes.

Why should members get involved with ASDA leadership positions?
ASDA provides a foundation for personal and professional growth. Through local and national events held by ASDA, dental students can enrich their education by learning topics outside of the dental curriculum such as practice management skills, encountering biases, overcoming barriers, and wellness. In addition, holding a leadership position allows you to build lifelong relationships with other dental students and future colleagues.

What future leadership roles in organized dentistry interest you and why?
In the future, I would like to be more involved with the American Dental Association. Since the values and mission of the ADA align so closely with those of ASDA, this would allow me to advocate for resources and mentor future ASDA leaders.
