Ryan Turner

Ryan Turner Memorial Scholarship

Ryan Turner was a fourth year dental student at the University of Michigan and a former board member when he passed away suddenly in January 2007. Ryan was passionate about dentistry and planned to enter an AEGD program with the Army following graduation. He was a devoted member of ASDA since his first year of dental school. He held chapter leadership positions and was also a class representative and legislative liaison. In 2005, Ryan was elected to ASDA’s board of trustees as District 6 trustee. A fellow ASDA leader described Ryan as “a great example of how someone with excellent leadership abilities should carry himself.”

Purpose of Scholarship
ASDA remembers Ryan Turner and his dedication to organized dentistry through an annual memorial scholarship in his honor. Each year, it is awarded to an ASDA member who demonstrates the same qualities and characteristics Ryan exhibited through his service to ASDA. The recipient will be chosen by the board of trustees and will receive $2,500, along with travel expenses to accept the award at the 2013 National Leadership Conference, Nov. 15-17, 2013. ASDA Grants for Chapters

Membership Outreach Grants

It is important that chapters provide new members an introduction to ASDA and the benefits of membership. Orientation events can vary from a welcome breakfast to a lunch and learn presentation to an evening cookout, but all events should educate members on ASDA. Many chapters experience funding challenges due to strict vendor policies or administrative issues that prevent them from holding local events.

Purpose of the grant
This grant is intended to help struggling chapters fund local events that promote membership and involvement in ASDA. Up to five grants of a maximum of $500 each will be awarded to ASDA chapters based on the criteria in the application.

Submitting an application
To apply, chapters must complete all sections of the application and send with supporting materials to Danielle Bauer, director of membership, by May 31, 2013. Events must be held by December 31, 2013.

Taking Oral Hygiene Awareness to Rural & Underserved America – Chapter Event Grant

Oral hygiene education and preventive dental care are effective and inexpensive ways to improve the quality of a patient’s life. Many children live in rural and underserved communities and are faced with difficulties accessing oral healthcare. There are often no dental schools within their proximity.

Purpose of the Grant
This grant is intended to support the funding of oral hygiene education initiatives implemented by predoctoral ASDA members with faculty supervision. This grant supports ASDA Current Statements of Position H-1: Student Involvement in Public Health in Dentistry and H-6: Student Outreach to Underserved Populations.

  • Alabama: Zack Rolen '15
  • Howard: Constantine Stavrinoudis '14

State Lobby Day Grant

Advocacy is at the heart of ASDA’s mission. Members are encouraged to support ASDA policies and protect their profession — and their patients’ rights — year round. At National Dental Student Lobby Day in Washington, D.C., federal advocacy is in action. However, it is the state level advocacy efforts that are key to advancing dentistry. Issues such as scope of practice and alternative workforce models are determined at the state and local levels.

Purpose of the Grant
This grant is intended to support advocacy at the local level. A maximum of $500 will be awarded per chapter, up to six chapters. Grants will be awarded based on those who demonstrate a need for financial support to organize a state lobby day. The Council on Advocacy will judge applications based on information provided about the event’s execution, funding sources and budgetary requirements.

2013 Grant Recipients
Congratulations to the following ASDA chapters who were awarded $500 to assist in the implementation or participate in a state lobby day event:

  •   Alabama
  •   Florida
  •   Kentucky
  •   Missouri
